The coordinator's first task is to acquire a solid understanding of the project program and site.
Their missions include:
- Opening the site logbook
- Developing the general coordination plan (PGC)
- Compiling the subsequent intervention file on the structure (DIUO)
- Defining constraints related to the implementation and use of collective protections, lifting equipment, temporary access, and general installations
- Taking measures to limit site access to authorized personnel only
- Ensuring the handover of instructions and document transmission to the coordinator in charge of the execution phase if different
- Assisting in drafting the preliminary declaration

Execution phase:
The coordinator's main missions during execution are to:
- Enforce the measures established in the PGC
- Adapt the PGC according to the project's evolution
- Regularly update the site logbook
- Conduct joint inspections with each contracting company
- Keep the PGC up to date and ensure its application
- Complete the DIUO until final acceptance

Safety coordination and health protection: regulatory values
The Labor Code sets out several provisions concerning coordination for building and civil engineering operations (articles R. 4532-1 to R. 4532-98). These provisions derive from law 93-1418 of December 31, 1993 (transposing Directive 92/57/EEC).
It specifies:
- The obligations of the project owner (articles R. 4532-4 to R. 4532-10)
- The missions of the safety and health coordinator (SPS), the conditions and modalities of exercising their missions, the required skills, and necessary training to acquire them (articles R. 4532-11 to R. 4532-37)
The SPS coordinator performs their missions under the responsibility of the project owner (article R. 4532-11). A contract defines the content of the mission entrusted to the coordinator, the means made available to them, and their authority.
